| description | This article studies viceroyalty tax policies towards the population of New Spain and examines the legal and moral pact between the viceroy and the Indians. The author analyzes legislation and tensions between the two parties during the Eighteenth-century crises and epidemics. These tensions turned into expressions and reactions of nonconformity towards the payment of tributes considered unfair: Indian demands against authorities, fleeing and fiscal evasion. This work describes and analyzes these actions among the Indian populations of central New Spain. Its conclusions help understand not only the system of tax collection from Indians in times of crisis, but also the historical discussion on the moral and legal bases of fair and equal medieval taxes, which later gave place to the New Spain tributes. |

Este artículo estudia la política fiscal del gobierno virreinal hacia los pueblos de la Nueva España, y examina el pacto jurídico- moral que existía entre el monarca y los indios, mediante el análisis de la legislación y de las tensiones que se suscitaron entre ambas partes durante las crisis y epidemias del siglo XVIII. Estas tensiones se tradujeron en expresiones de inconformidad y reacción ante la obligación de contribuir con tributos considerados indebidos: demandas de los indios contra las autoridades que les exigían contribuciones percibidas como injustas, o acciones como la huida y la evasión fiscal. El trabajo revisa y analiza estas respuestas de la población indígena de la zona central novohispana, aportando no sólo al conocimiento de la dinámica de tributación de los indios en tiempos de crisis, sino también al estudio histórico de las discusiones sobre el fundamento moral y jurídico de la justa y equitativa imposición medieval, de la cual derivaron los tributos novohispanos.
