| description | This article offers a detailed study of the parties given to Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in his native city of Xalapa, within an analytical frame that takes into account: 1) A typology of Hispanoamerican leadership in the first half of the 19th century, and 2) From and anthropological perspective, the importance such parties had in order to maintain the leaders in the power. The article focuses on the people's ready disposition to encourage and celebrate powerful leaders as Santa Anna within a context of breakdown and agitation, such as that of 1808. It also shows the ways by which leaders were able to keep their privileged positions, and highlights the political and cultural reverberations of the ritual. The study of the multiple Santanic parties celebrated in Xalapa depicts how Santa Anna was able to become, in his native town and in the light of his countrymen, the nation's saviour. |

Este artículo ofrece un estudio detallado de las fiestas que fueron brindadas a Antonio López de Santa Anna en su ciudad natal de Xalapa dentro de un marco analítico que toma en cuenta: 1) una tipología del caudillismo hispanoamericano de la primera mitad del siglo XIX, y que: 2) resalta la importancia que tuvieron las fiestas para sostener a los caudillos en el poder, desde una perspectiva antropológica. Se resalta la facilidad con la que la gente estaba predispuesta a buscar y a celebrar líderes fuertes como Santa Anna en el contexto de ruptura y convulsión que se dio a partir de 1808. Se muestran, también, las maneras en que los caudillos lograron perpetuarse en el poder, y se hace hicapié en la resonancia político-cultural del ritual. El estudio de las múltiples fiestas santanistas que fueron celebradas en Xalapa demuestra cómo, sobre todo en su ciudad natal, pasó Santa Anna a ser a los ojos del pueblo xalapeño y, por ende jarocho, el salvador de la patria.
