| description | Groundwater floods were probably the worse risk in colonial silver mining, because of the high costs of draining or because the floods which could not be drained forced workers to eave important silver deposits. During the seventeenth century, the machines used in New Spain for draining groundwater were very inferior to those used in England or Germany. This essay analyzes a prívate colonial attempt, in the 1720's, to obtain the Newcomen fire bomb and other European devices, which would prove more efficient than local ones. One obvious obstacle to technological transference is the suspicious behavior of the people involved in such projects. |

This essay analyzes a prívate colonial attempt, in the 1720's, to obtain the Newcomen fire bomb and other European devices, which would prove more efficient than local ones. One obvious obstacle to technological transference is the suspicious behavior of the people involved in such projects. El riesgo de las aguas subterráneas constituyó el factor quizás más negativo en la minería colonial de la plata, sea por la incidencia de los costos de desagüe o porque cuando la inundación no podía ser vencida, obligaba al abandono de importantes yacimientos. También resulta evidente, desde el siglo XVII, el retraso de la maquinaria de desagüe aquí empleada respecto a los avances ocurridos en dicho ramo en las minerías inglesa y alemana. Este ensayo analiza un intento privado originado en la Nueva España en la década de 1720 tendiente a obtener la bomba de Newcomen y otros ingenios europeos cuya operación a gran profundidad fueran más eficientes que los locales. Ante las reconocidas causas que pueden obstaculizar la transferencia tecnológica, este caso revela la importancia que podría tener a veces la maliciosa conducta de los personajes involucrados en proyectos de tanta significación técnica y económica.
