| description | Expanding public education as a means to ensure progress and happiness was one of the most widespread late-eighteen century illustrated ideals, and Bourbon reformers carried this ambition all the way to New Spain 's distant frontiers. The community of Chihuahua, a mining and merchant center which alternated with Durango as capital of New Vizcaya, adopted this ideal, offering the means to establish its first public school. This article describes how the financing, building, furniture, teacher and school supplies were obtained, considering also issues such as management, definition of norms, contents, and tasks, student selection and advancement, supervision of the teacher by town officials, testing, and the relations between the school and the community and public authorities. This article offers a whole panorama, from the antecedents and the problems encountered in creating the school, to the period of inertia which led to the first teacher's eventual discharge. The author concludes by assessing the school's later influence and its importance for different population sectors. |

Extender la instrucción pública fue uno de los ideales ilustrados más difundidos a finales del siglo XVIII, como base para lograr el progreso y la felicidad. Los reformadores borbónicos llevaron esta ambición hasta las lejanas fronteras de la Nueva España. La comunidad de la villa de Chihuahua, centro minero y comercial que se alternó con Durango como capital de la Nueva Vizcaya, se identificó con ese ideal, y aportó los medios para establecer su primera escuela pública. Se relata aquí la manera como se obtuvo el financiamiento, el edificio, el mobiliario, el maestro y los útiles escolares; se retoman los procesos para administrarla, definir las normas, los contenidos y las tareas, la selección y promoción de alumnos, la supervisión del maestro por parte del ayuntamiento, la evaluación de los aprendizajes, las relaciones entre la escuela y la autoridad pública y la comunidad. En este artículo se ofrece un panorama desde los antecedentes y avatares para establecer la escuela, hasta llegar a la inercia que culminó con el despido de su primer preceptor. Finalmente, se realiza un balance del significado que tuvo la escuela para los diversos sectores de la población local y de su influencia en la posteridad.
