His high economic position, his leading role among Puebla employers and among the members of the Spanish community and, above all, his activism against the revolutionary movement made him the main target of popular hostility, spurred by the triumph of Carranza and expressed in a brief but strong wave of hispanophobia. His definitive return to Spain was the price this businessman had to pay for the great privileges he enjoyed. |

Este texto trata la trayectoria económica y los altibajos en la posición política de uno de los empresarios más prominentes de Puebla. Nacido en Asturias y emigrado desde Sevilla, este hábil hombre de negocios, que incursionó de modo destacado en la agricultura, en la industria textil y en la banca, con intereses que desbordaron los llímites del estado, también tuvo influencia en la política local, en los últimos años del gobierno de Díaz, y en los de Madero y de Huerta. Su elevada posición económica, su función dirigente entre los patrones de Puebla y entre los miembros de la colonia española, y sobre todo su activismo contra el movimiento revolucionario, lo hicieron blanco preferido de la hostilidad popular que se desató con el triunfo de Carranza, bajo la forma de una breve, pero exacerbada ola de hispanofobia. El precio que este empresario pagó por los grandes privilegios que disfrutó, fue su salida de México y su regreso definitivo a España.
