| description | This paper seeks to reconstruct the reception of Viva villa! -an American movie about revolutionary leader Francisco Villa- in different parts of the world between 1934 and 1940. It is evident that the film found followers in many places, regardless of ideological differences: in National Socialist Germany, in the Soviet Union and, particularly, in Republican Spain. Only in Mexico were official reactions negative. What this paper attempts to evince is the power of modern media -as was cinema at the time- to create through their representations historical imaginaries that, on the one side, have a global reach but, on the other, acquire their meaning in their place of reception through a complex interaction -or competition- with existing imaginaries built upon historical experiences and specific political interests. |

El ensayo intenta reconstruir la recepción de Viva Villa!, película estadounidense sobre el líder revolucionario Francisco Villa, en diferentes partes del mundo, entre 1934 y 1940. Salta a la vista que la cinta encontró aficionados en muchas partes y por encima de las diferencias ideológicas, así en la Alemania nacionalsocialista, en la Unión Soviética y sobre todo en la España republicana. Únicamente en México las reacciones oficiales fueron negativas. Lo que el texto, de esta manera, quiere demostrar es el poder de los medios modernos, como lo fue el cine en la época tratada, para crear mediante sus representaciones imaginarios históricos, que por un lado tienen un alcance global, pero que por otro lado adquieren su significación en el lugar de su recepción en una compleja interacción –o en competencia– con imaginarios existentes, creados a partir de experiencias históricas e intereses políticos concretos.
