| description | The first three decades of the twentieth century saw a gradual pacification among the rebel Mayas of Yucatan, who for over half a century had struggled against both Yucatecs and Mexicans. As they accepted the reconcilatory measures of Mexico's succesive revolutionary governments, they also got involved in the capitalist exploitation of gum. However, this process developed not only because of state's and capital's incorporating pressure, but also due to Mayan society's rationale of trying to preserve their autonomy. By examining the activities of Francisco May, the most important Mayan leader of that time, this paper describes how Mayas cleverly negotiated with the outer world, and clarifies the duality in the position of Mayan leaders, who acted as mediators between two worlds. |

En las tres primeras décadas del siglo XX, se vio una pacificación gradual de los mayas rebeldes de Yucatán, quienes por más de medio siglo habían luchado contra los yucatecos y mexicanos. Al mismo tiempo que fueron aceptando las medidas conciliadoras de los gobiernos del México revolucionario, se fueron involucrando en la explotación capitalista del chicle, pero ese proceso no se desarrolló sólo por las presiones incorporadoras del Estado y el capital, sino también por la lógica de la sociedad maya que trataba de conservar su autonomía. Analizando las actividades de Francisco May, el jefe maya más importante de la época, este artículo describe cómo los mayas negociaban astutamente con el mundo exterior, y aclara la dualidad de la posición de los jefes mayas que actuaban como intermediarios entre dos mundos.
