| description | On June 7, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the year 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025), as a result of long scientific and diplomatic negotiations that began in October 2021, at the initiative of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. This article gives an account of the origins, preparations and significance of the IYQ2025 declaration and offers a reflection on the diplomatic negotiations undertaken.
The celebration of the centenary of the first breakthroughs in modern quantum mechanics provides a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of quantum science and technology in our lives and its transformative impact on society. Hence the need for each country to develop its own capabilities in this field, both scientific, technological and productive, in order to contribute to scientific progress and, at the same time, to take advantage of its benefits for society and national development. |

El 7 de junio de 2024, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) proclamó al año 2025 como el Año Internacional de la Ciencia y la Tecnología Cuánticas (AIQ2025), como resultado de largas gestiones científicas y diplomáticas que comenzaron en octubre de 2021, por iniciativa de la Unión Internacional de Física Pura y Aplicada. Este artículo da cuenta de los orígenes, los preparativos y el significado de la declaración del AIQ2025, y ofrece una reflexión sobre las negociaciones diplomáticas llevadas a cabo. La celebración del centenario de los primeros avances de la mecánica cuántica moderna brinda una valiosa oportunidad para crear conciencia sobre la importancia de la ciencia y la tecnología cuánticas en nuestras vidas y su impacto transformador en la sociedad. De ahí la necesidad de que cada país desarrolle capacidades propias en este terreno, tanto científicas como tecnológicas y productivas, para contribuir al avance científico y, al mismo tiempo, aprovechar sus beneficios en pro de la sociedad y del desarrollo nacional.
