Description
Summary:This paper discusses a range of aspects of political polarization in Mexico. It argues that political polarization is not a new phenomenon in the country but rather reflects the evolution and dynamics of the party system. Based on data from surveys, both academic and media, a number of patterns of polarization among the nationwide electorate are described, which may be ideological, party-based on emotional, and based on the new political axis of positions in relation to the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T). It also discusses diverse theoretical perspectives on political polarization, its metrics, causes and potential implications, seeking to further the discussion in relation to the case of Mexico and putting forward a number of considerations in this regard. The main aim is to document different facets of political polarization.
