| description | This paper analyzes the Haitian political crisis that occurred in 1991 with the coup d’état against Jean-Bertrand Aristide, which culminated in his return to power by the US military operation “Uphold democracy” in 1994. On the one hand, we discuss the prevailing coloniality of power that presented the crisis in dichotomous terms between liberal democracy or authoritarianism. On the other hand, we note the parallel criticisms that were made of the international community, the United States, the military junta and the elected president, showing how coloniality was answered from within Haiti, in particular by media such as the newspaper Le Nouvelliste. |

En este artículo se analiza la crisis política haitiana que ocurrió en 1991 con el golpe de Estado en contra de Jean–Bertrand Aristide, la cual culminó con el retorno de éste por la operación militar estadounidense “Defender la democracia” de 1994. Por un lado, se discute la colonialidad del poder imperante que proyectó la crisis en términos dicotómicos entre democracia liberal o autoritarismo. Por otro, se da cuenta de las críticas que paralelamente se esgrimieron contra la comunidad internacional, los Estados Unidos, la Junta Militar y el susodicho, mostrando cómo la colonialidad fue contestada desde Haití, en particular por medios de difusión como el diario Le Nouvelliste.
