Aunque de manera aparente la democracia y los derechos humanos están estrechamente vinculados, existen numerosos puntos de tensión. Estos antagonismos implican la subordinación de la democracia a los derechos humanos, lo que constituye un conflicto en ciertos modelos democráticos pero no así en el entendimiento más sustancial de la democracia. Algunos de los aspectos que se analizan en este escrito son las nociones de igualdad y libertad en las distintas filosofías políticas, así como los límites que impone a los Estados el derecho internacional de los derechos humanos y las implicaciones que esto tiene para el ejercicio de los derechos humanos en los regímenes democráticos.
