Moreover traditional stakeholders such as trade union movements have lost their central role. This paper analyzes two Mexican social movements of great significance. It starts out from the consideration that while it is important to analyze the capacity of social movements to influence the political system, it is even more important to study them on the basis of the meaning they themselves ascribe to their actions. |

A pesar de que hubo importantes movimientos sociales: el de autonomía sindical en los años setenta y el zapatista en los años noventa, la sociedad civil estuvo poco presente en el proceso de democratización de los años noventa que dio lugar a la salida del pri de la presidencia. Además, los actores tradicionales, entre ellos el sindicalismo, han perdido su centralidad. En este artículo analizamos dos movimientos sociales mexicanos fuertemente cargados de sentido. Partimos de la idea de que si bien es importante analizar la capacidad de los movimientos sociales de influir sobre el sistema político es, incluso prioritario, estudiarlos con base en el sentido que ellos mismos otorgan a su acción.
