| description | This paper discusses the relations between nafta and the following transformations on economics, society, politics, and Mexican policies. The treaty continues and ensures the new liberal trend in the Mexican economy. Besides, the transition towards democracy did not suffer major setbacks. The continuity of Mexico’s foreign defensive policies after 1994 and its international influence are also examined. |

Este artículo examina las relaciones entre el tlcan y las transformaciones de la economía, la sociedad, la política y las políticas de México. El tratado no fue un proyecto aislado ni un cambio de rumbo inesperado, sino el resultado de un programa de reformas estructurales que daba vuelta a la página del modelo “nacional-popular” de la Revolución. El tratado viene a perpetuar y a asegurar el nuevo curso liberal de la economía mexicana. Además, no hubo incidencia, más que para retardarla, en la transición democrática. El artículo se interroga igualmente sobre la continuidad de la política exterior defensiva de México después de 1994 y su influencia internacional.
