Diplomacy by the Maghrebi states has sought the support of Latin American countries in defending their positions in international forums. While Morocco, taking an irredentist position, asserts the Moroccan identity of the Saharan region, Algeria and the SADR favor the self-determination of the territory. This diplomatic approach to the continent draws attention to ideological affinities, the promotion of shared cultural ties and the search for more stable commitments to the recognition of the SADR by countries in the region. |

El asunto del Sáhara Occidental, que opone desde hace décadas a Marruecos con Argelia y la República Árabe Saharaui Democrática (RASD), constituye un conflicto regional que impacta en las vinculaciones con otros escenarios, como es el caso de América Latina. Las diplomacias de los Estados magrebíes han buscado el apoyo de los países latinoamericanos para la defensa de sus posiciones en los foros internacionales. Mientras Marruecos, desde una postura irredentista, postula la “marroquinidad” del Sáhara, Argelia y la RASD promueven la autodeterminación del territorio. En este despliegue por el continente se ponen en evidencia afinidades ideológicas, la promoción de lazos culturales comunes y la búsqueda de compromisos más estables en torno al reconocimiento o no de la RASD por los países de la región.
