| description | The media coverage of the involvement of women in the uprisings in the Arab world reveals both discontinuities and synergies between local and Western perceptions of the revolts. The presence of women in the protests gives rise to contradictory readings rooted in a surprisingly robust orientalism. Although in certain circumstances Arabic women appropriated Western feminist reference points, the media emphasis on parallels with iconic landmarks in women’s liberation in the west serves to present Middle Eastern women as mimicking the same path towards female modernity. Finally, the media coverage also often emptied the actions of women of their radical content, thereby reducing political gestures to colorfullocal tradition. |

La cobertura mediática de la participación de las mujeres en las revueltas del mundo árabe revela discontinuidades y sinergias entre percepciones locales y percepciones euroamericanas de lamovilización. La presencia de las mujeres en las protestas provoca lecturas contradictorias ancladas en orientalismos sorprendentemente robustos. Aunque en ciertas coyunturas las mujeresárabes se apropiaron de puntos de referencia feministas euroamericanos, el énfasis mediático sobre paralelos con hitos icónicos de la liberación femenina euroamericana presenta a las mujeres del Medio Oriente como mímicas de un camino occidental hacia la modernidad femenina. Finalmente, en la coberturamediática las acciones de las mujeres fueron con frecuencia vaciadas de su contenido radical, reduciendo gestos políticos a colorida tradición local.
