En Le grand renversement de l’État social, Sacha Lévy-Bruhl propone una definición exhaustiva del Estado social y reflexiona sobre su significado para la sociedad francesa. El Estado social aparece como una institución que asume la función de difundir una idea determinada del individuo, en virtud de la cual no es posible considerarlo como responsable de su situación socioeconómica. No en vano, a lo largo de las últimas décadas, se ha cuestionado esa noción al responsabilizar de manera creciente a las personas a través de las políticas de activación y contractualización.
