| description | The history of cities is also the history of their calamities and how they confront them. These cities embody a testimonial character that aids in understanding societal responses and meanings in the face of disruptive events such as those caused by epidemics. From a historiographical perspective, this book—a derivative of a thesis—focuses on Victorian London during the nineteenth-century cholera pandemic as its case study. It highlights two significant aspects: the ways in which cultures react to epidemics and the observation that, in response to fear or uncertainty, religion and science have consistently served as the two natural and unchanging responses to such crises, which often become conflated. |

La historia de las ciudades es también la de sus calamidades y de cómo las enfrentan. Contienen en sí mismas un carácter testimonial para comprender lo que se hace y se significa como sociedad ante eventos disruptivos como los provocados por las epidemias. Desde la historiografía, este libro, que es un subproducto de una tesis, utiliza como objeto de estudio la ciudad del Londres victoriano ante la pandemia decimonónica del cólera. Ahí se resaltan dos situaciones: el modo en que las culturas reaccionan ante las epidemias y que, ante el miedo o la incertidumbre –además de huir– la religión y la ciencia han sido las dos respuestas naturales e invariables para encararlas, las cuales, comúnmente, terminan confundiéndose entre sí.
