| description | The paper examines the influence of religious values -specifically from the Catholic Church- in the legislation of the rights of dying patients to refuse medical treatments by the National Congress of Argentina. Based on the analysis of a corpus of bills introduced in the last decades (from 1996 to 2012), the tensions and articulations between confessional and secular arguments surrounding the attempts to legislate on matters regarding autonomy at the end of life are discussed. The paper describes the sources and arguments found in these initiatives and the use of religious values to support divergent positions regarding the rights of terminally ill patients. The important presence and the invocation to religious values respond to a particular configuration of Argentinean secularity and political culture, which reflects the crystallization of complementary spaces between religion and politics. |

El artículo examina la influencia de valores religiosos -específicamente de la Iglesia católica- en la regulación de los derechos de los pacientes con enfermedades terminales a rechazar tratamientos por parte del Congreso Nacional de Argentina. A partir del análisis de las iniciativas parlamentarias sobre la temática (entre 1996 y 2012), se discuten las tensiones y articulaciones entre argumentos confesionales y laicos en los intentos de legislar sobre las decisiones en el final de la vida. Se describen las fuentes y los argumentos presentes en estas iniciativas, y la invocación a valores religiosos para fundamentar posiciones divergentes respecto a los derechos de los pacientes terminales. La importante presencia y la apelación a valores religiosos responden a una particular configuración de la laicidad y de la cultura política argentina, que refleja la cristalización de espacios de complementariedad entre lo religioso y lo político.
