| description | Business cycles in the North American countries have converged, while per capita income gaps remain; thus, factoral remunerations must be different. If North America were a single economic area the relevant variables ought to converge and, according to the pure theory of international trade, factoral productivity should also be similar; particularly when trade between those counties maintain intraindustry patterns. This paper explores the differences in productivity in North America by means of basic indicators and the concept of the “vertically integrated sector”. Results indicate that industries are increasingly interdependent and that productivity in each country follows independent paths. |

Los ciclos económicos de los países norteamericanos han convergido, en tanto que permanecen las brechas en los ingresos por habitante ya que las remuneraciones factoriales son desiguales. Si América del Norte es un área económica única, las variables deberían converger espontáneamente y, de acuerdo con la teoría del comercio internacional, dado que las tres economías intercambian bienes bajo patrones intraindustrales, la productividad factorial debería ser similar. Este trabajo explora las diferencias en la productividad en los tres países empleando indicadores básicos y el concepto de “sector verticalmente integrado”. Los resultados indican que los sectores son crecientemente interdependientes y que la productividad sigue sendas independientes.
