Los cambios en los coeficientes técnicos se explican esencialmente por cambios tecnológicos —salvo cuando hay diferencias en los precios. Asimismo, existen modelos que sostienen la hipótesis de que las diferencias de coeficientes a lo largo del tiempo serán negativas. Los datos para la economía mexicana proporcionan indicios de que esta hipótesis se cumple sobre periodos largos, si bien la evidencia es a veces contradictoria para los periodos cortos.
