| description | This paper analyzes the effects that the macroeconomic model of trade liberalization exerts on competitivity, firms and employment, on both the modern and maquila industries within the metropolitan area of Monterrey. This study shows that such model is based on both poles of the region's industrial growth, which is shown through the production growth, exports and job creation. The paper emphasizes that the employment growth is unequal: while very dynamic in the maquila, industry on the other hand it is very sluggish in the modern one. Likewise, it highlights that both industries involve antagonic social offers. The modern industry, although with a slow rate of employment growth, generates sources of highly remunerated qualified labour. Contrarily, the maquila, with a dynamic employment offer, generates jobs that have no need for qualification and offer minimum wages. The conclusion derives from the question: Which of both tendencies will be dominant in the future of Monterrey's industrialization? |

El artículo analiza los efectos del modelo macroeconómico de apertura comercial sobre la competitividad, las empresas y el empleo en la industria moderna y en las maquiladoras de la Zona Metropolitana de Monterrey. El estudio demuestra que dicho modelo se sostiene en estos dos polos de crecimiento industrial de la región, y se caracteriza por el crecimiento de la producción, las exportaciones y la generación de empleo. El trabajo subraya que el crecimiento del empleo es diferenciado; muy dinámico en la maquiladora y muy lento en la industria moderna. Asimismo, resalta que ambas industrias son portadoras de ofertas sociales antagónicas. La industria moderna, aunque con lento crecimiento del empleo, produce fuentes de trabajo calificado y altamente remunerado; por el contrario, la industria maquiladora, con una oferta dinámica de empleos, produce puestos de trabajo que no requieren calificación y que son retribuidos con salarios mínimos. La reflexión final del trabajo se centra sobre la interrogante ¿cuál de ambas tendencias será la dominante en la futura industrialización de Monterrey?
