| Summary: | The purpose of this paper is to analyze air pollution as a social construction. This means to think it as a product of ideological and political factors. The theoretical framework of this article has to do with the idea of risk as an unintended and generalized consequense of the process of industrial modernization, specially in the contemporary stage of relexive modernization. Pollution, from this point of view, appears as a form of risk produced in a particular society and in the context of a specific mobilization of meanings, interests and values. Apart from its physical and chemical aspects, pollution can be heightened, minimized or hidden because of ideological and political factors. Mexico City air pollution problems are thought in this framework, trying to reconstruct the ideas of authors such as Crenson, Douglas and Beck who have brought the air pollution issue to the sociological and political debate.
