| description | Few studies focus on the gender of Mexican immigrants in the United States: it is taken for granted that most are men. However, that which applies for round-trip migrations ceases to do so for one way populations. This analysis considers some aspects of the international migration of Mexican women, seen under the light of two recent statistical sources: the North American 1990 census and the 1993-1994 Internacional Migration Survey at the Mexican Northern Border (EMIF, 1994). The joint analysis of migrations and migrant inventories reveals the hidden scope of feminine exile, as well as some of its peculiarities, and offers numerical answers to two questions: How does sex differentiate Mexican immigrants in the United States? How does the migration affect work, marriage, child-bearing, etc. of Mexican women? The results suggest the need to address migration no longer as an action of individuals, but of families (most immigrants are married), and to place the mother or the wife at the gravity center of the household migratory space. The fact that the women are in the United States instead of in Mexico modifies the journeys of male workers and, in an incidental manner, the extent of migration flows. In this sense, the multiplying effect of feminine migration magnifies considerably its small numbers, all of which has important demographic consequences. |

Pocos son los estudios que se interesan en el sexo de los migrantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos, pues se da por sentado que la mayoría son hombres. Sin embargo, lo que es cierto para las migraciones circulares deja de serlo en el caso de las poblaciones expatriadas, mejor equilibradas. Este análisis aborda ciertos aspectos de la migración internacional de las mexicanas, a la luz de dos fuentes estadísticas recientes: el censo estadunidense de 1990 y el recuento de las migraciones en la frontera norte de México, en 1993-1994. El análisis conjunto del inventario de los migrantes y de las migraciones, revela la amplitud oculta del éxodo femenino, así como varias de sus particularidades, a la vez que proporciona una respuesta numérica a los interrogantes: ¿En qué diferencia el sexo a los migrantes internacionales mexicanos en Estados Unidos? ¿Qué impacto ejerce el éxodo sobre el trabajo, la nupcialidad, la fecundidad, etc., de las mexicanas? Los resultados sugieren la necesidad de interpretar la migración como un acto ya no individual, sino familiar (la mayoría de los migrantes están casados), y colocan a la madre, a la esposa, en el centro de gravedad del espacio migratorio del hogar. El que la mujer se encuentre en Estados Unidos y no en México, modifica la movilidad de los trabajadores y, en forma incidente, la amplitud del éxodo. En este sentido, el efecto multiplicador de la migración femenina amplifica considerablemente su modesta importancia numérica, lo cual tiene importantes repercusiones demográficas.
