Description
Summary:This study points out some conditions associated with the appearance of female-headed households and reports some limitations and conceptual possibilities of declared headship regarding the source of the family's economic support, specially when it is provided by a woman. Data from the Demographic and Health Survey (Enfes) at the national level and the National Survey on Urban Employment (eneu) for the city of Tijuana reveal that, taking into account declared household headship, the biases associated with age and sex make it difficult to identify the person that supports the family. Hence this paper proposes to increase the analytical possibilities of household survey data by adding questions regarding the resources actually provided for the family by each member of the household.
