As a consequence, the existence of an urban working class -the most important social group in western cities during the past century- capable to exert an important influence on the process of urbanization in Latin America has been scarcely documented. This article deals with a city whose history has been linked, since its origins, to the needs of the industrial sector and where development has been greatly influenced by the urban working class and its trade unión. |

Uno de los problemas de la antropología urbana en nuestros países se deriva del hecho de que la mayoría de sus ciudades surgieron y crecieron al calor de las necesidades de la administración colonial y (o) de los requerimientos del intercambio de productos entre el campo y la ciudad. Por lo anterior, la presencia de una clase obrera urbana –el grupo por excelencia en las grandes ciudades occidentales de la centuria pasada– con capacidad de incidir en el proceso de urbanización latinoamericana ha sido escasamente documentada por la disciplina antropológica. Este trabajo se refiere a una ciudad cuya historia ha estado ligada desde sus orígenes a las necesidades de la industria y en cuya construcción ha tenido un papel protagónico la clase obrera y su organización sindical.
