| description | This article attempts to reconstruc part of a study on female sterilization. The research began with a national demographic survey, which was continued with a regional psychologically- oriented survey and has been complemented with studies that apply qualitative analysis techniques and the redrawing of conceptual frameworks for reproduction-related topics and the regulation of fertility. The author attempts to bring together the features of several analytical perspectives for the study of female sterilization. He also argues that research needs to focus more on the social normativity of reproduction and sterilization, the way in which it is put into effect by institutional health programs and family planning services. The paper also suggests the need to study health aspects of the women have chosen this birth control method, who are estimated to total 25 percent of all married women of reproductive age in Mexico. |

Este artículo pretende reconstruir parte de una investigación sobre el tema de la esterilización femenina. La investigación partió de una encuesta nacional demográfica, se enriqueció con una encuesta regional con vertiente psicosocial y se ha ido complementando con estudios que incorporan técnicas de análisis cualitativo y rediseño de marcos conceptuales para el estudio de temáticas relacionadas con la reproducción y la regulación de la fecundidad. En este trabajo se pretende mostrar algunas características de diferentes propuestas analíticas para el estudio de la esterilización femenina y se proponen como necesidades actuales de investigación al análisis de la normatividad social alrededor de la reproducción y de la esterilización, la forma en que la instrumentan los programas institucionales de salud y, en particular, los prestadores de servicios de planificación familiar. Además, se sugiere la necesidad de indagar elementos de la salud integral de las mujeres que han optado por este método y que se estima son la cuarta parte de las mujeres unidas en edad fértil de todo el país.
