| description | This study makes use of documentary sources from the archives of the French diplomatic corp and Venezuelan municipal agencies to reconstruct the process by which French urban development ideas were introduced and disseminated in Venezuela from 1936 through the decade of the 1950's. The story is traced through the activities of urban planners Maurice Rotival and Jacques Lambert and the role they played in the institutional organization of urban planning in Venezuela.Their influence, which took hold at the municipal level beginning with the creation of the Department of Urban Development and the Caracas Global Plan completed in 1939, would be consolidated after World War II - in spite of Rotival's increasingly favorable disposition toward currents developing in the United States - with the creation of the National Urbanism Commission as the first national planning agency.The impact of the two planners was also felt through their development of human resources. |

Con el apoyo de fuentes documentales, de los archivos diplomáticos franceses y de los organismos municipales venezolanos, se reconstruye una historia del proceso de introducción y difusión del urbanismo francés en Venezuela desde 1936 hasta el decenio de los años cincuenta. Para lograr este objetivo, se sigue la trayectoria de los urbanistas Maurice Rotival y Jacques Lambert, así como el papel que desempeñaron en la organización institucional de la planificación urbana en Venezuela.Esta influencia, que se instaura en el nivel municipal con la creación dela Direcciónde Urbanismo y el Plan Monumental de Caracas, terminado en 1939, se consolidará —a pesar de la progresiva apertura de uno de sus mentores, Rotival, hacia la corriente estadunidense— después de la segunda guerra mundial, al constituirsela Comisión Nacionalde Urbanismo como el primer organismo nacional de planificación, y por su papel adicional en la formación de recursos humanos.La documentación revisada permite valorar las gestiones de la representación diplomática francesa para apuntalar influencias y aquilatar negocios posibles en el escenario urbano.
