| description | This study deals with the principal sociodemographic features which have characterized the development and dynamics of the Cuban family during the last decade. It also describes the way in which sociocultural changes taking place in Cuba have influenced the family. The article includes an analysis of average age at first marriage or union, types of marriage, changes in fertility rates (and how women contribute to these changes depending on their age), and the dissolution of the family unit. This study emphasizes growth rate patterns of individual units as well as of the population at large, and the evolution of the average number of individuals in the household, including differentials according to geographic areas. Taking into account the definition given to the term "head of household", the author presents the basic structure of the household according to sex, age, marital status, and kinship ties between family 'members and the head of household, focusing also on the relationship established between individual life cycles and the family unit. Finally, the study analyzes government policies, programs and projects that affect the Cuban family. |

El trabajo aborda los principales rasgos sociodemográficos que han caracterizado el desarrollo y la dinámica de la familia cubana en la última década. En el mismo se describe cómo han influido a nivel de la familia algunos de los cambios socioculturales que han tenido lugar en el país. Se incluye un análisis de la edad media al primer matrimonio o unión, los tipos de matrimonio, el comportamiento de las tasas de fecundidad y la contribución que a la misma hacen las mujeres según su edad; también se analiza la disolución familiar. Se destaca el comportamiento presentado en las tasas de crecimiento de los núcleos particulares y de la población total, así como la evolución presentada en el promedio de personas por hogar, incluido su diferencial por zonas. Atendiendo a la definición de jefe de hogar se presenta la estructura de los hogares según sexo, edad, estado conyugal y parentesco de los miembros con el jefe, destacando la relación que se establece entre el ciclo de vida personal y la familia que los mismos conforman. Finalmente, se hace un análisis de algunas de las políticas, programas y proyectos de acción que se han dirigido a la familia cubana y en muchos de los cuales ha faltado el enfoque de unidad.
