| description | The analysis concentrates on the mortality of adult population at ages 15 to 74 in 8 countries of the American continent. With few exceptions, these countries are those with the best information and lowest mortality. Temporary life expectancies and years of life lost are the indices used in the analysis. Results are presented by age, sex and principal groups of causes of death. It is concluded that: a) mortality can significantly decline further in the Americas; b) there are noticeable mortality differentials by cause among the countries; c) all the countries still have excess mortality in certain age groups and causes of death, and hence, the mortality transition has not ended. In most of the countries there are a great number of deaths from certain causes that could be avoided, mainly among the young adult ages. |

El análisis se concentra en la mortalidad de la población adulta de 15 a 74 años de edad de ocho países del continente americano. Con pocas excepciones, estos países son los que tienen mejor información sobre mortalidad, y un nivel de mortalidad relativamente bajo. Esperanzas de vida temporarias y años de vida perdidos son los índices utilizados en el análisis. Los resultados se presentan por edad, sexo y principales grupos de causas de muerte. Se concluye que: a) la mortalidad puede seguir descendiendo significativamente en las Américas, b) hay diferencias notorias entre los países en relación con la mortalidad por causas de muerte, c) todavía todos los países tienen exceso de mortalidad en ciertas edades y por determinadas causas de muerte, y, por consiguiente la transición de la mortalidad no ha terminado. En la mayoría de los países todavía ocurren muchas muertes por ciertas causas específicas que podrían evitarse, principalmente entre las edades adultas jóvenes.
