| description | This article focuses on the structural conditions that characterized imperial Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and their effect on the demography of the period. The author argues that the political, economic, and social contradictions prevalent in the nation -such as imperial expansion, the strengthening of the seigniorial system and that of the Church, the heavy tax burdens, and the decline of agriculture, among others- caused a lag in capital accumulation. This sum of contradictions helps explain the easy spread of epidemics and the high rate of mortality in Spanish territory. |

Con base en el estudio de las condiciones estructurales que caracterizaron a la España imperial de los siglos XVI y XVII, este artículo analiza sus repercusiones en el proceso poblacional de la misma época. Así pues, se explican las contradicciones políticas, económicas y sociales que definieron esta nación, tales como la expansión imperial, el fortalecimiento del régimen señorial y de la Iglesia, las fuertes cargas fiscales, la declinación agrícola, entre otras más, las cuales provocaron su rezago en la acumulación originaria de capital. La suma de contradicciones sirve para definir la fácil propagación de epidemias y el alto índice de mortalidad en territorio español.
