| description | This paper discusses the demography of a parish of colonial Mexico, Santa Maria de la Presentación de Chilapa, during the last quarter of the eighteenth century, through an analysis of parish records of the time and the Bucareli census.First, an estimate is made of the population and of the breakdown of that population, by sex, age, and marital status. On the basis of those estimates and information from parish records, some indicators are calculated in order to describe the corresponding demographic profile. The demographic information obtained is then related to historical and anthropological data. The analysis adds to our understanding of the demographic behavior during the colonial era and confirms what has been pointed out in other studies about the slow but gradual recovery of the population of colonial Mexico, decidedly immersed in epidemics and famines that caused periods of high growth as well as other periods of no population growth. |

El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer el estado de la población de una parroquia del México colonial, Santa María dela Presentaciónde Chilapa, en el último cuarto del siglo XVIII, a través del análisis de los registros parroquiales de la época y del censo de Bucareli.En primer lugar se hace una estimación de la población y de la composición de ésta, según sexo, edad y estado civil. A partir de esas estimaciones y la información de los registros parroquiales, se calculan algunos indicadores para describir el perfil demográfico correspondiente. La información demográfica obtenida está relacionada con elementos de tipo histórico y antropológico. Así, el análisis realizado permite abundar en el conocimiento del comportamiento demográfico durante el periodo novohispano y valida lo ya destacado en otros lugares sobre la lenta pero paulatina recuperación de la población del México colonial, imbricada fuertemente con epidemias y hambrunas que provocaban periodos de alto crecimiento con otros de nulo crecimiento poblacional.
