La escuela culturalista constituye la primera gran reflexión sociológica sobre la ciudad. Ésta aparece como escenario de un sistema de valores y de formas de conducta emergentes indisolublemente asociadas al nacimiento de la sociedad capitalista. De Tönnies a Redfield asistimos al proceso, no sólo de construcción de una reflexión sociológica sobre el modo de ser urbano, asistimos también al esfuerzo crítico más riguroso de los valores de la sociedad moderna que la ciudad personifica. De allí el verdadero valor de estos pensadores que aquí hemos agrupado bajo el título genérico de culturalistas.
