| description | The autor assesses the role of demographic change in the generation of conditions of social conflict on the basis of a review of a fragment of the vast bibliography available on the Mexican Revolution. It is pointed out that the moderate rise in population growth was accompanied by an incipient concentration of the population in cities and a movement of the same towards the north of the country. The composition of the population also underwent changes as rates of literacy and industrial occupation increased. While the rise in population intensificied competition for and conflict over land, this article stresses the nature of the institutions as a decisive element linking demographic change to a peaceful or violent resolution of the conflicts. It is maintained that the changes in the demographic dimension, as fundamental components of the social structure, possibly served to impel the course of events. |

Se realiza una evaluación del papel del cambio demográfico en la generación de condiciones de conflicto social a partir de la revisión de un fragmento de la vasta bibliografía sobre la Revolución mexicana. Se destaca que la moderada aceleración del crecimiento de la población fue acompañada por una incipiente concentración de la población en las ciudades y un movimiento de la misma hacia el norte del país. La composición de la población también se modificó al incrementarse la alfabetización y el trabajo industrial. Si bien el crecimiento de la población intensificó la competencia y el conflicto por la tierra, el ensayo pone el acento en la naturaleza de las instituciones como el elemento decisivo que vincula el cambio demográfico con la solución pacífica o violenta de los conflictos. Se sostiene que los cambios en la dimensión demográfica como componentes fundamentales de la estructura social posiblemente impulsaron el curso de los acontecimientos.
