Descrição
Resumo:The autor assesses the role of demographic change in the generation of conditions of social conflict on the basis of a review of a fragment of the vast bibliography available on the Mexican Revolution. It is pointed out that the moderate rise in population growth was accompanied by an incipient concentration of the population in cities and a movement of the same towards the north of the country. The composition of the population also underwent changes as rates of literacy and industrial occupation increased. While the rise in population intensificied competition for and conflict over land, this article stresses the nature of the institutions as a decisive element linking demographic change to a peaceful or violent resolution of the conflicts. It is maintained that the changes in the demographic dimension, as fundamental components of the social structure, possibly served to impel the course of events.
