| description | The impact of mortality in Mexico is noticeably greater among small children, specially during the first year of life. This article presents the levels and trends of deaths among children under the age of one, by groups of causes, for some states, for the years 1979- 1985. Identifying the causes of death according to the international classification of diseases, both for deaths among children under the age of one and for total deaths, the goal is to establish a comparison of the levels of general and infant mortality by groups of causes. The data are taken from the statistical yearbooks of the Head Office for Statistics, for the years 1979 to 1985.Trends in deaths by groups of causes are described for each of Mexico's six most populated states, of foreigners and those who did not indicated correctly the state they were from, as well as for the national level, with an analysis of the differences observed for the period under review among the states taken into consideration. |

El impacto de la mortalidad en México es notoriamente mayor en las primeras edades, especialmente en el primer año de vida. El trabajo presenta los niveles y tendencias de las defunciones de menores de un año, por grupos de causas, para algunas entidades federativas, para los años de 1979-1985. Clasificándose las causas de muerte de acuerdo conla Clasificación Internacionalde Enfermedades, tanto para las defunciones de menores de un año como para el total de las defunciones; la finalidad es tener una comparación de los niveles de mortalidad general e infantil por grupos de causas. Los datos son tomados de los anuarios estadísticos dela Dirección Generalde Estadística, para los años de 1979 a 1985.Se describen las tendencias de las defunciones por grupos de muerte para cada uno de los seis estados más poblados de la República Mexicana, de los extranjeros y de los que no declararon su entidad correctamente, así como para el nivel nacional, analizándose las diferencias que en el periodo en estudio se observan entre cada uno de los estados considerados.
