Sumario: | In the year of 1973 there was a change in the statistics of births; until the year before, and since this information began to be published, births were classified according to the place of registration. Since 1973, births have been classified according to the states, municipality or town of "customary residence of the mother". In the certificates, both the old and the new formats, the places of registration and births are easy to identify; in the old because every certificate states the place where it was issued (state, municipality or town, and the number of the office); and in the new because the certificate always mentions explicity the place of birth with state, municipality or town. But for the place of permanent residence of the mother, the adress given by the parents is registered. The information on the place of residence doesn't necessarily include the name of the state and town, leaving the interpretation of this information to the judgement of the officers of the Registro Civil, the Dirección General del Registro Nacional de Población (RENAPO) and the DGE. This lack of clarity in the registration device brings about problems of precision in the information obtained. The object of this work is to analyze how the place of "customary residence of the mother" has been registered and to determine if the change of classification has some effect in the comparability of the information about births in different states. The information analized is divided into two periods, according to the way in wich it was obtained and processed and the institution responsible for its publication.
