| description | The purpose of this article is to analyze the evolution of mortality in Mexico during this century, especially as of the year 1940. First of all, some considerations are put forward regarding the sources of information and the reliability of the indicators, and the parameters for mortality which, in our opinion, best reflect the evolution of this phenomenon, are presented. Next, the development of the phenomenon is examined in terms of level and structure by age, sex, and cause of death. Then the decrese in mortality is placed within the country's historical context, and other transitions in mortality are discussed. Lastly, some differentials within the country are evaluated and an assessment is made of the extent of what has been called "Mexican excess mortality. " |

" El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la evolución de la mortalidad en México durante este siglo, en especial a partir de 1940. En primer lugar, se efectúan algunas consideraciones sobre las fuentes de información y la confiabilidad de los indicadores y se presentan los parámetros de mortalidad que, en nuestra opinión, mejor reflejan la evolución del fenómeno. Posteriormente se examina esta evolución en cuanto al nivel y a la estructura por edad, sexo y causa de defunción. A continuación se sitúa la disminución de la mortalidad dentro del contexto histórico del país y otras transiciones de mortalidad. Finalmente, se analizan algunas diferenciales dentro del país y se determina el monto de lo que se ha denominado “sobremortalidad mexicana”.
