| Summary: | The urban dynamics of Venezuela is analyzed in this article. In the first part, the authors examine the foundations and evolution of the urban system starting in the colonial period, the beginning of oil exploitation with the discovery of the first oil field, and the impact of the oil market and its consequences on the Venezuelan economy, stressing the situations that brought about change in the population and in its distribution throughout the country. Then a review is conducted of the organization of urban space, and a typology of cities is drawn up, in accordance with the economic and social function they performed on a national and regional level, on the basis of which a classification is made of urban centers from a demographic viewpoint. The second part of the paper is devoted to an analysis of die new conditions faced by the evolution of the urban system, due to changes in the components of demographic growth and the process of deconcentration of the capital region and the strengthening of the central region of the country. Lastly, an assessment is made of the factors enabling us to draw up projections regarding the future expansion of Venezuelan cities.
