Description
Summary:According to several authors, labor informality is a relevant issue for economic development. There are structural and institutional factors that could explain this phenomenon. Analyzing 74 metropolitan areas from 2005 to 2020 and following the methodology of Dougherty and Escobar (2013) by using fixed effects estimates, we find that the population size of the metropolitan area, the education, the demographic composition of the workers regarding their sex, age, and origin, as the cost of opening a new business affect informality in the metropolitan areas of Mexico.
