Es una obra útil e importante para los investigadores de las ciencias sociales que se interesan por la cuestión urbana en América Latina y particularmente en cómo interpretarla a partir de una nueva visión de la teoría marxista, pudiendo también alcanzar a los estudiosos de esa teoría interesados en conocer nuevos planteos sobre la “heterogeneidad estructural” en las sociedades o ciudades latinoamericanas, como indica el título de la obra. En el libro el autor busca revisar de manera crítica los planteamientos positivistas elaborados alrededor de la oposición formalidad-informalidad y sus consecuencias políticas; asimismo, procura contribuir al desarrollo de la reflexión sobre esos temas desde la tradición marxista.
