Description
Summary:The Redatam statistical package is a software package developed by ECLAC and widely used in countries of America for the dissemination of census statistics. Although it is free to use, it is licensed as proprietary software (not open source) and stores its data in a non-public format. This article introduces research results describing the data structure used by this software. They include: a) a preliminary specification of the Redatam format, b) a tool for accessing and exporting its databases, and c) the evidence that –contrary to what the technical documentation states– Redatam does not implement strategies for compression and encryption of the microdata it stores.
