Descripción
Sumario:This paper is the result of an exploratory socio-demographic study undertaken with the aim of analyzing the trends in fertility in various socio-cultural contexts in the Soconusco Region of Chiapas on the border between Mexico and Guatemala. The data were obtained retrospectively for a period of twenty years (1977-1996). A 28% decline from 4.25 to 3.11 was recorded in the overall fertility rate of women ages 15 to 34, with significant variations within each context, with heterogeneous ratios regarding the prevalence and characteristics of the use of contraceptive methods, as well as age at first union. These findings prove the importance of considering the particularities and specificities of each socio-cultural context in analyzing the changes in fertility and the varying impact of the family planning program.
