| Summary: | The last quarter of the 20th century saw the emergence of new forms of international migration that require new approaches of migration theories as well. The main argument of the article is that in addition to the more traditional types of emigration/immigration and return migration a type of transmigration in pluri-local transnational social spaces is also beginning to emerge. First, some important new approaches in international migration theory are presented and discussed. This leads to the conclusion that -in the age of globalization- the relation between social space and geographical space is an important issue in the study of international migration. After reviewing this topic in general terms the consequences for international migration theory are discussed. Finally the article outlines some scientific and political consequences of the transmigration approach. |
