| description | This article has a two-fold aim. First, to show that research is a continuous process of learning, particularly when one is dealing with areas of knowledge for which there is no specific disciplinary tradition, as in the case of environmental studies from a social science perspective. Second, to show, using a practical example, that this process is not a linear practice but a two-way process in which theoretical-methodological elements are constructed, discarded and reinterpreted until they create a coherent body of interpretation. That is why this article has not been organized in a conventional fashion and instead, follows a process of presenting ideas, raising questions, defining and redefining the routes to be followed and showing the difficulties faced from the initial conception of the idea to the application and interpretation of empirical work, passing through the development of a theoretical-methodological strategy. This is illustrated by an exploratory study on the relationship that the common-land owners of San Nicolás Totolapan, now mainly acknowledged as ejido owners of the same name, have established with the natural resources of their ejido, located on the southern periphery of Mexico City. |

Este artículo tiene un doble objetivo: Por un lado, evidenciar que el quehacer de la investigación es un proceso continuo de aprendizaje, particularmente cuando nos enfrentamos a áreas del conocimiento para las cuales no existe una tradición disciplinaria específica como es el caso de los estudios ambientales desde las ciencias sociales. Por otro lado, destacar, mediante un ejemplo práctico, que dicho proceso no es una práctica lineal sino un camino de ida y vuelta en el cual se construyen, se desechan y se reinterpretan los elementos teórico-metodológicos hasta conformar un cuerpo coherente de interpretación.Es por lo anterior que esta exposición no se ha organizado de acuerdo con un orden convencional sino que se ha estructurado más bien en función del proceso seguido para presentar las ideas, plantear las preguntas, definir y redefinir los caminos a seguir y, mostrar las dificultades enfrentadas desde la primera concepción de la idea hasta la aplicación e interpretación del trabajo empírico, pasando por el desarrollo de la estrategia teórico-metodológica. La investigación que nos sirve de pretexto es un estudio exploratorio sobre la relación que los descendientes de los comuneros de San Nicolás Totolapan, hoy reconocidos principalmente como los ejidatarios del mismo nombre, han establecido con los recursos naturales en su ejido, ubicado en la periferia sur de la Ciudad de México.
