Descripción
Sumario:The aim of this article is first to analyze the socio-spatial inequalities of the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey for the period from 1970- 1990, in the eight municipalities comprising it, and second, to separate this analysis into the 781 basic geostatistical areas into which these municipalities are subdivided for 1990. To this end, six variables that reflect the quality of life of the city population were selected. These variables, including income and education levels, as well as aspects involving the degree of comfort in various types of housing, served to quantify five socio-economic levels using the well-known statistical technique of factor analysis. Thirdly, on the basis of the socio-spatial pattern identified, the author proceeded to construct a general model of metropolitan structure for Mexico, according to which 35% of the total area of Mexican metropolises is occupied by the lower strata, 25% by medium and 20% by upper strata, together with 80% of streets and facilities. The remaining 20% of the city plan is taken up industrial and commercial activities and services.
