| description | By analyzing documents and testimonials of organizations belonging to Mexico’s Homosexual Liberation Movement in its early years, as well as newspaper articles, this paper shows this movement’s strategies to involve grassroots sectors of vestidas in urban protests. It focuses on the actions of the Frente Homosexual de Acción Revolucionaria (fhar), whose members considered the practice of cross-dressing a central part of their notion of gay liberation and an essential aspect of their political commitment to the popular classes. This study of the controversies triggered by the fhar’s cross-dressing strategies shows the relation between the modern gay identity and a wide range of trans identities. By taking this approach, this paper locates the history of the homosexual liberation within a wider queer history of Mexico’s recent past. |

Con base en algunos documentos y testimonios de las agrupaciones que conformaron el Movimiento de Liberación Homosexual en México durante sus primeros años, así como en el análisis de la prensa, esta investigación da cuenta de las estrategias para involucrar a los sectores populares de travestis en la movilización urbana. Particularmente, sigue las acciones del Frente Homosexual de Acción Revolucionaria (fhar), el cual consideró que la práctica del travestismo era una parte central de su noción de liberación homosexual y que resultaba esencial en su compromiso político con las clases populares. El análisis de las controversias desatadas por las estrategias travestis del fhar da cuenta de la relación entre la moderna identidad gay y un amplio abanico de identidades trans. Así, este relato permite situar a la historia de la liberación homosexual dentro de una historia queer del pasado reciente en México.
