| description | In this paper, I describe and conceptualize the restriction or freedom with which transgender people move through urban public spaces in response to unwanted reactions from other passers-by. I address the phenomenon from the 1990s to the early 2020s, in Greater Buenos Aires and the cities of San Luis and Villa Mercedes (San Luis province), Argentina. The study employs a qualitative methodology based on an inductive approach to data. To collect and produce data, I conducted semi-structured interviews and participant observations with transgender individuals. The results present three types of circulation of transgender people through urban public spaces related to unwanted reactions from other passers-by: restricted, conditioned, and free. Additionally, I analyze variations in these types of circulation and describe the processes that transgender people undergo to walk through the streets with relative freedom. In the final reflections, I emphasize the disadvantaged situation of transgender people in their ability to move freely through urban spaces, the cissexist nature of urban public space, but also its role in actively cisgendering subjects, as well as shifts in these configurations. The article contributes to our understanding of transgender people’s everyday lives and the relationship between urban public space and gender. |

En este artículo describo y conceptualizo la restricción o libertad con que las personas trans transitan el espacio público urbano en función de reacciones indeseadas de demás transeúntes. Abordo el fenómeno desde la década de 1990 hasta principios de la de 2020, en el Gran Buenos Aires y las ciudades de San Luis y Villa Mercedes (provincia de San Luis), Argentina. Empleo una estrategia cualitativa basada en el trabajo inductivo con los datos. Para la recolección y producción de los datos empleo entrevistas semiestructuradas y observaciones participantes con personas trans. En los resultados presento tres tipos de tránsito de las personas trans por el espacio público urbano relacionados con reacciones indeseadas de demás transeúntes: restringido, condicionado y libre. Además, analizo variaciones en esos tipos de tránsito y describo el proceso que conlleva para personas trans poder andar por la calle con relativa libertad. En las reflexiones finales subrayo la situación desventajosa de las personas trans para circular libremente por la vía pública, el carácter cisexista, pero también cisexuante del espacio público urbano, y cambios en esas configuraciones. El contenido del artículo aporta a la comprensión de la vida cotidiana de las personas trans y de las relaciones entre espacio público urbano y género.
