description Gender-based violence has increasingly been studied across higher education institutions around the world. These are complex organizations open to the highest ideals, but also to hierarchies, power struggles, and gender differences. Many studies have analyzed gender violence in these settings, but clerical and administrative staff have been largely absent from these analyses. Through a survey among male and female administrative workers of the University of Guadalajara, this study aimed to explore the circumstances and consequences of workplace and sexual harassment experienced by this type of personnel. Eighty-eight percent of all workers have experienced workplace harassment; nearly a half have noticed sexual harassment around them, while fifty-three percent of females and thirty-six percent of males have directly experienced it themselves. Sexual harassment has consequences for both, men and women, but is more prevalent among female workers than among their male counterparts. These findings suggest that higher education institutions remain, true to their origins as male institutions. Sexual roles spill over work roles in this organization, as they do in most traditional environments.

La violencia de género se ha hecho patente en la última década en instituciones de educación superior (IES) en todo el mundo. Las IES son instituciones complejas, abiertas a los más altos ideales de la cultura, pero también a las jerarquías, las luchas de poder y las desigualdades. Diversos estudios se han abocado a analizar la violencia de género en las IES, sin embargo, el personal administrativo ha quedado difuso o invisibilizado en sus representaciones. Por medio de una encuesta a 227 trabajadores y trabajadoras administrativas de diversos Centros de la Universidad de Guadalajara, este estudio buscó conocer las manifestaciones y consecuencias del acoso sexual y laboral hacia este personal. Se encontró que 88% ha vivido acoso laboral, cerca de la mitad percibe acoso sexual en su entorno de trabajo, y 53% de las mujeres y 36% de los hombres lo han experimentado. Las consecuencias del acoso han sido distintas para mujeres y hombres, ocurriendo en mayor proporción entre las trabajadoras que entre ellos. Estos hallazgos sugieren que las universidades continúan siendo instituciones masculinas (por sus valores, dinámicas, organización e integración), en las que los roles sexuales siguen superponiéndose a los roles laborales.
