It describes how the practice of collecting Asian art (and Japanese art in particular) developed, based on a representative selection of collectors from different countries in the region. In addition to tracing the current situation of some of these collections, it demonstrates the local agency involved in the importation and circulation of these objects, and an early knowledge about Japan, independently of Europe’s initial involvement. |

El texto realiza un análisis general de la circulación de objetos de arte japonés en América Latina durante las últimas dos décadas del siglo XIX y los primeros cincuenta años del XX, para describir cómo se desarrolló la práctica del coleccionismo de arte asiático (y japonés en particular) a partir de una muestra representativa de coleccionistas de diferentes países de la región. Además de rastrear la situación actual de algunas de estas colecciones, se demuestra cómo hay una agencia local en la importación y la circulación de estos objetos, y un conocimiento temprano sobre Japón, independientemente de la mediación inicial de Europa.
