Este artículo investiga los orígenes y el desarrollo de la fotografía qajar en Irán, desde sus primeras manifestaciones en 1842 hasta comienzos del siglo XX. Relaciona los agentes que intervinieron en su rápido progreso, con especial atención a la figura del sah Naser al-Din, quien impulsó la fotografía y además se destacó en este arte. Se analizan las aportaciones de otros fotógrafos importantes en estos primeros años, sobre todo extranjeros, pero también representantes de la corte Qajar. Diversos factores posibilitaron un tipo de fotografía en Irán que se diferencia de la realizada en regiones vecinas de Oriente Próximo.
